Balance Serum is a lightweight, lipid-rich facial serum and moisturizer for skin that is oily, congested, breakout-prone, or a little out of rhythm. This 27-plant formula helps clarify congestion, calm visible irritation, and nourish the barrier and microbiome, all while keeping the skin’s natural lipids intact.

This is the lightest of the Laurel Skin Serums, but one of the most grounding sensorial experiences packed with whole plant nutrition. Raw, unrefined oils mimic the skin’s natural lipid structure, while medicinal herbs and essential oils work together to lower inflammation and support clearer, more resilient skin. The goal with oily skin is never to strip the barrier, but support its conditions so that the skin feels balanced and healthy.

  • Tamanu — a rich, resinous oil traditionally treasured for its restorative and calming qualities. Especially lovely for congested or reactive skin, Tamanu helps nourish the barrier while supporting the appearance of skin recovering from breakouts.

  • OILS, BARRIERS + THE COMEDOGENIC SCALE
    The skin’s lipid barrier is mostly made up of fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol. Plants contain their own versions of fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterols that closely resemble our own and can support barrier health, but only when those plant oils are left unrefined. Traditional cosmetic oil refinement strips away the very nutrients that make oils biologically compatible with skin. This is why Laurel Skin works exclusively with whole, unprocessed plants and raw oils.

    Oil balances oil. While this can sound counterintuitive, most oily and breakout-prone skin has been through years of stripping from foaming cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and oil-free moisturizers. This leaves skin stressed, inflamed, and more prone to imbalance. When skin is properly hydrated with a Hydrating Elixir and supported with a lightweight oil Serum, it often begins to recalibrate on its own. Internal factors matter too, and we always encourage addressing those alongside topical care.

    Balance Serum, like all of Laurel’s Serums, is non-comedogenic. The comedogenic scale is based on outdated testing of standardized, highly refined cosmetic oils and additionally doesn’t account for the skin microbiome. Their oils are raw, nutrient-rich, and enzyme-intact, meaning they are recognized, metabolized, and utilized by the skin more readily. For this reason, the comedogenic scale simply doesn’t apply to whole-plant formulations like Laurel’s.

  • After misting the skin with a hydrosol or Elixir for hydration, press 3–5 drops of Serum into the slightly damp face, neck, and décolleté.

    When additional moisture or barrier support is needed, follow with Balm.
